Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering

What skills are you typically looking for?

ACDI/VOCA is always looking for new volunteers to support our development initiatives. We have ongoing needs for candidates with at least five years' experience in business, agriculture, banking and financial services, marketing, cooperative development, food processing and other areas. View a list of our current assignments and the skills needed.

Do I need to speak the local language?

Foreign language skills are not required, but can be an asset. In cases where the volunteer does not speak the local language and the in-country host does not speak English, an interpreter is provided.

In which countries do you need volunteers?

ACDI/VOCA has projects throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet Union, Latin America and the Middle East. Click here to view a list of countries where ACDI/VOCA is currently active.

How long are the assignments?

Volunteer assignments typically range in length from 3 to 6 weeks. There are a few long-term volunteer assignments.

Will there be any cost for me to volunteer?

Volunteers contribute their time and expertise. ACDI/VOCA pays for all assignment-related expenses. These include round-trip coach airfare, passport, visas, lodging, meals and incidentals, project materials, required immunizations, emergency medical evacuation, and supplemental health insurance, etc. The insurance coverage is provided under ACDI/VOCA’s policy with AIG Inc.

What kind of housing is provided?

This varies from country to country and depends upon whether you are based in an urban or a rural area. In urban areas, volunteers are typically housed in moderate quality hotels, guesthouses, or apartments that the project leases. In rural areas, you may be asked to stay with the host, or in more rustic settings. Lodging information is provided in the scope of work for each assignment.

Where does ACDI/VOCA receive its funding?

ACDI/VOCA receives funding for its programs from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, gifts, grants and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.

May I take my spouse or other family member?

We do not have funding to pay expenses for a spouse or other family member. If you would like to schedule a post-assignment vacation, we encourage family and friends to meet you after you have completed your obligations. Activity schedules may change during your assignment, which may cause difficulty in coordinating with people who are not participating in the assignment.

How do I apply?

Please complete an on-line volunteer application. You will need to attach a description of your professional experience (résumé or CV). After you complete the application, your name and skills will be entered into our national volunteer database. This enables us to contact you regarding future assignments that match your interests and expertise. Please note that because the program is demand-based, a willingness to volunteer does not guarantee automatic placement.
