Brush Cutters

Managing between two and five hectares of land for the production of annual crops such as citrics, cacao, maize, yucca, and garden vegetables is labor-intensive and time-consuming, especially if one does it all by hand. Keeping the land clear of weeds and brush can be a full-time job. The presence of extensive weeds affects directly and negatively the crop yields, thereby reducing farm incomes. In addition, the wrong management of soil protection crops has a negative effect in the plantations.

Under the YCADF, gasoline-powered brush cutters were purchased for several Yungas communities where farmers can now spend less time clearing unwanted brush and weeds correctly managing their soil protection crops and affording more time to other productive activities. Recipient communities are listed below.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
