Broiler Chicken Production

(Link to Broiler Chicken Production Success Story)

ChickenThrough the YCADF, Fourteen families in the community of Santa Fe de Tutirihuara received infrastrusture, equipment, initial supplies, training and technical assistance for the small-scale production of meat chickens. Prior to YCADF grant assistance, these families raised chickens for sale in Caranavi and Guanay in primitive corrals, with ventilation problems, lack of nutrition, diseases and other negative factors affecting productivity.

In the first phase of the project individual chicken houses, with a capacity for 300 chickens per family were constructed. After the construction every structure was supplied with feeders, automatic drinking water dispensers, an initial supply of balanced feed, veterinary supplies, 100 starter chicks, and other miscellaneous supplies and equipment. At the end of the construction, technical assistance and training in health, nutrition, care, handling, commercialization of chickens were provided.

With support in infrastructure, equipment and training, these 14 families currently have a business with income generation that contributes to the success of the community.

This project also received the complementary help from volunteer consultants. Mr. Kenn Holleman brought his expertise of health, nutrition and management of the instalations. This technical assistance was provided with visits and field work in family chicken farms and through classes and seminars.

Incahuara, Caranavi

ACDI/VOCA, through YCADF, assisted twenty-five families in the community of Incahuara by providing infrastructure, equipment and technical assistance for the small-scale production of laying hens. The project provided for the construction of 50 hen houses (two for each family with a maximum capacity of 120 hens each), feeders, automatic drinking water dispensers, an initial supply of balanced feed, veterinary supplies, starter chicks, and other miscellaneous supplies and equipment, and technical assistance and training in health, nutrition, care, handling, commercialization of eggs, and basic business administration for small-scale producers.

La Fuente, South Yungas

Seven families from La Fuente received assistance in the form of equipment, initial supplies, and training and technical assistance for the small-scale production of broiler chickens. Previously, these families raised chickens in primitive chicken coops for food, barter, and, in some cases for external sale. The first phase of the multi-phase project involved the construction of individual chicken houses (with a capacity for 300 chickens) for each family. After construction, each structure was equipped with feeders, automatic drinking water dispensers, an initial supply of materials to prepare balanced feed, veterinary supplies, 100 starter chicks, and other miscellaneous supplies and equipment. At the conclusion of construction, technical assistance and training was provided in the areas of feeding, nutrition, sanitation, management, administration, and sales/marketing of broiler chickens.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
