Sheep Production
YCADF helped the community of Bolívar de Incahuara, in the Caranavi region, to construct 14 corrals (one for each beneficiary family) with a capacity for 20 sheep each and establish agroforestry systems with a mix of shade trees to be used as forage (Glicyne and Brachiaria Humidicola pasture, together with forestry species such as leucaena). Each pasture is divided into 14 individual grazing fields of 5,000 m2 each (1/2 hectare). Pastures are delineated by the use of “live fences” of different tree species, which also serve as a source of organic matter and provide shade for the animals. ACDI/VOCA is providing training and technical assistance in sheep-raising and production, including management, health, nutrition, feed supplements and marketing of products obtained. This initiative is the responsible for allowing the families in the community to benefit from the sale of products such as leather and meat.
