Sanitation Facilities

(Link to Sanitation Facilities Success Story)
(Link to Latrines Success Story)

SanitationIn accordance with recommendations from USAID, the YCADF is installing sanitation facilities at the household level to all families who have received a potable water connection under the Yungas Development Initiative (YDI).

In rural areas of Caranavi and the South Yungas, where there is adequate separation between residential dwellings, sanitation facilities consist of a free-standing outhouse with a toilet, shower, and a large sink for both hand washing and laundry. A septic tank, in combination with either a seepage pit or infiltration trench is used for wastewater disposal. Composting (dry) latrines are used in areas with low-permeability soils, a high water table, or where the use of a septic tank/seepage pit system is not appropriate.

In semi-urban areas of Caranavi and the South Yungas, where housing is more concentrated, ACDI/VOCA installs sanitary sewer systems with in-ground conveyance piping, household sewer connections, and discharge treatment facilities.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
