Education in the Yungas

School

For children in the Yungas, it is not uncommon to travel long distances on foot in order to attend school in a neighboring community. Combine the travel distance with lack of necessities like desks and chairs, bathroom facilities, accessible potable water, and proper cooking facilities for preparing food and one can see the challenges of obtaining an education.

School

Under the YCADF, several communities in Bolivia are gaining educational facilities which provide the proper environment for learning. Also under the YCADF, students have incentives to attend school -- proper facilities, less overcrowding, desks and chairs, housing for their teachers, and if needed, a place to stay overnight.

School

Also under the YCADF, ACDI/VOCA Bolivia is a USAID sub-grantee assisting in the management of scholarship funds, awarded to students at the University of Carmen Pampa, 1/2 hour outside of Coroico. In continuing efforts to achieve sustainable development in the Yungas, education represents a lasting contribution to improving the lives of young people in the region and in raising the standard of living for all residents. The following communities in the Yungas are benefiting.

CARANAVI

Construction of Student Dormitory in Colonia San Antonio, Caranavi

The student dormitory is constructed to complement the existing high school and house students from neighboring communities who travel long distances to attend school. The new facility consists of two levels, complete with dormitories, an administration office, multi-use workshop, kitchen, dining area, laundry room, and bathrooms and showers. Total square footage - 450 square meters.

Construction of Student Dormitory in Nueva Kollasuyo, Caranavi

The student dormitory is constructed to complement the existing school, which serves as a regional educational center. The new facility has the capacity to house 64 students from neighboring communities and consists of two levels, complete with dormitories, an administration office, multi-use workshop, kitchen, dining area, laundry room, and bathrooms and showers. The project will also provide appropriate furnishings. Total square footage - 450 square meters.

Guillermo Molina School and Teacher Housing in Colonia Entre Rios, Caranavi

The architectual design for the Guillermo Molina School includes 6 new areas for classrooms, administrative building, a library, a lounge, and a perimeter chain link fence to protect the school area.

Student Dormitory in Sararia, Caranavi

The student dormitory is constructed to complement the existing school, which serves as a regional educational center. The new facility has the capacity to house 64 students from neighboring communities and consists of two levels, complete with dormitories, an administration office, multi-use workshop, kitchen, dining area, laundry room, and bathrooms and showers. The project will also provide appropriate furnishings. Total square footage - 450 square meters.

Construction of Three Classrooms for the elementary School in Sapecho, Caranavi (Municipality of Palos Blancos)

The elementary school in Sapecho receives students from smaller communities nearby. Before construction of new classrooms, the school did not have adequate facilities for the number of children in attendance. However, now the school has three new classrooms, each with space for 30 students. The addition of these new classrooms has alleviated overcrowding and benefitted the 300 students who currently attend the Sapecho school.

Construction of Three Classrooms for the Simon Bolivar School in Villa Yara, Caranavi

YCADF completed the construction of three additional classrooms for the school in Villa Yara, in a neighborhood of the town of Caranavi. Previously, the school could not accommodate the more than the 500 students enrolled. The new classrooms have a capacity for 30 students each, which will help ease current overcrowding. The project directly benefits the 500+ students who attend Simon Bolivar and indirectly benefits the student's family members, estimated at 2,000 individuals.

NORTH YUNGAS

Construction of Additional Facilities for San Pedro Parochial School in Coroico, North Yungas

Over 200 people directly benefitted from the construction of an additional classroom and multi-purpose activity room for the San Pedro Parochial School. YCADF also paid for the refurbishing of the schools sports field and reconstruction of a fallen retaining wall.

SOUTH YUNGAS

Education Complex in Agua Dulce, South Yungas

Students from Agua Dulce who wanted to continue their education after the primary school years had to travel to Puerto Carmen, some 7 km away. With their new education complex, which replaces a one-room primary school, the community of Agua Dulce now has six classrooms with a capacity for 30 students, administrative offices, multiple bathrooms, housing for six teachers, and a multi-functional sports field. YCADF project funds provided furnishing for the complex.

School Expansion, Teacher Housing, and Completion of Existing Community Center in Flor de Mayo, South Yungas

In the community of Flor de Mayo, a number of children have not attended school due to the lack of educational facilities. To alleviate this problem for the 185 residents of Flor de Mayo, the YCADF provided funds to complete the existing community center, build two new school classrooms with furniture, and construct bathroom facilities and a multi-functional sports field with bleachers.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
