Sewer and Storm Water Drainage Systems

Sewer

Many communities in the Yungas are without proper sewer and storm drainage systems. With the goal of improving infrastructure and sanitation standards, the YCADF has constructed new sewer and storm water drainage systems or replaced inadequate existing systems in selected Yungas communities.

In the province of Nor Yungas, the communities of Coripata (2,680 inhabitants - 480 household connections) and Arapata (1,614 inhabitants - 400 household connections) have new sewer systems which provide service to approximately 80% of the population.

In Caranavi, construction of a new sanitary sewer system is underway in the community of Carrasco La Reserva. The new system will provide sewerage for 100% of the existing population of 225.

Sewer systems consist of a gravity sewerage collection network of inground PVC piping, manholes, treatment units, sludge-drying beds, and PVC conveyence piping for discharge of treated effluent. In Coripata, Storm water drainage improvements consist of a construction of a series of canals, drainages, and culverts at strategic locations within the community to alleviate flooding and erosion problems.

YCADF projects include education and training for community members in the operation and maintenance of the new sewer systems.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
