Broiler Chicken Production Success Story

(Link to Chicken Production Project Description)

Broiler Chicken Production in Santa Fe de Tutirihuara

In July 2006 we visited Mr. Mario Agnota farm, located 5 minutes after Santa Fe, road to Guanay and we could appreciate the efficient usage of the individual chicken houses. Some of the key points that show the results and positive impact generated by the project follow:

Mr. Mario Agnota and his wife Basilia Morales, both Santa Fe de Tutirihuara residents and beneficiaries of the project, said:

Now, I'm more excited about the project than before, before too much work for little gain… I couldn't even get our needs covered… it was only rice and banana… (Mr. Mario). We welcomed the project with open arms because we know that the coca is not the answer to our problems… nowadays we are seeing the results…especially for me, it is a job more adequate for my incapacitation (he does not have an arm), now we can eat better and give more things to our children…Through the organization that we created with 12 of the 14 beneficiaries, we are innovating and experimenting, for instance using electric light instead of a lighter, that way the chickens grow faster and we reduce costs. That is why we are managing a project to have electricity…Regarding the commercialization… I always have a buyer, our chicken is well paid… we want to open stores, one in Caranavi and the other in Santa Fe, that way we could sell our chicken directly to the consumer, duplicating our gains. The training and classes have been our foundation, we have learnt health, management and nutrition. I want to leave my business in the town (store) and come here to live in the farm and work exclusively with chicken.

The Yungas Community Alternative Development Fund is funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by ACDI/VOCA Bolivia. The project described here is part of a bi-national initiative to improve the standard of living and increase the productive potential of those residing in the North Yungas, South Yungas, and Caranavi provinces in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. This activity is part of a greater effort aimed at containing and eliminating illicit and excess coca production
